Abstract
Behavioral economics and cognitive psychology have documented dozens of systematic biases in human judgment and decision-making — anchoring, availability, representativeness, loss aversion, and many others. These findings, many originating in laboratory experiments by Kahneman and Tversky, have been widely applied in policy, design, and business. But the replication crisis has reached this literature too. Some classic findings have replicated reliably; others have not. This report reviews which biases are most robustly documented in real-world settings and which remain primarily laboratory phenomena.

We Are Not as Rational as We Think: Cognitive Biases and Real-World Decision Making
Abstract
The behavioral economics revolution demonstrated that human decision-making systematically departs from the predictions of classical rational choice theory in predictable ways. Dozens of cognitive biases have been documented in experimental settings. The more challenging question — how large these biases are in real-world decisions and how much they can be reduced — has produced a more nuanced picture than the popular narrative suggests.
Background
In the 1970s and 1980s, psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky produced a series of papers demonstrating that human judgment under uncertainty follows predictable patterns that violate rational choice models. Their work documented phenomena like the availability heuristic (judging probability by how easily examples come to mind), representativeness bias (matching observations to stereotypes rather than base rates), and anchoring (over-weighting initial numbers when estimating unknown quantities). The resulting body of work — summarized in Kahneman's 2011 book Thinking, Fast and Slow — became enormously influential in psychology, economics, public policy, and management.
The broad cultural reception of this work established a narrative: humans are fundamentally irrational, prey to dozens of cognitive biases, and require external "nudges" to make better choices. This framing is partly correct and partly oversimplified.
The Evidence
Foundational Experiments
The most replicated findings from Kahneman and Tversky's program hold up robustly. Anchoring is particularly well documented: Tversky and Kahneman (1974, Science) showed that participants who spun a wheel of fortune — rigged to land on either 10 or 65 — and were then asked to estimate the percentage of African countries in the United Nations gave answers significantly influenced by the random number. Groups who saw 65 first estimated approximately 45%; those who saw 10 estimated approximately 25%. This effect has been replicated across contexts from negotiation to judicial sentencing.
Loss aversion — the finding that losses are weighted approximately twice as heavily as equivalent gains — was central to prospect theory (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979, Econometrica), for which Kahneman received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002. Meta-analyses have confirmed the basic pattern across cultures and contexts, though estimates of the exact magnitude vary and some recent work suggests weaker effects than originally reported.
The planning fallacy — the tendency to underestimate the time, cost, and risk of future actions while overestimating benefits — was formalized by Kahneman and Tversky (1979) and has been extensively documented in construction projects, software development, and personal goal-setting. Buehler et al. (1994, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology) found that students consistently underestimated how long it would take to complete personal projects, even when asked to consider their worst-case scenarios.
Large-Scale Replication
A coordinated effort to replicate key findings from behavioral economics — the "Replication Markets" project and the broader Open Science Collaboration — found that many experimental effects replicate but that effect sizes are often smaller than the original reports. The Open Science Collaboration (2015, Science) replicated 100 psychology studies and found that 64% showed a significant effect in the same direction, but the average effect size was approximately half the original. Anchoring and loss aversion replicated robustly; other findings were more mixed.
Biases in High-Stakes Real-World Contexts
The field has also examined whether biases documented in lab experiments appear in consequential real-world decisions. Several findings stand out:
Medical diagnosis: Chapman and Elstein (2000, Medical Decision Making) found that physicians showed availability bias in diagnosis — assigning higher probability to conditions they had recently encountered. Other studies have documented anchoring in clinical judgment: initial diagnoses anchor subsequent evaluation of test results.
Financial markets: Barber and Odean (2000, Journal of Finance) analyzed trading records of 66,465 U.S. households and found that individual investors who traded most frequently achieved significantly lower net returns than those who traded least — consistent with overconfidence bias and the disposition effect (selling winners too early, holding losers too long).
Judicial sentencing: Englich et al. (2006, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin) found that experienced judges were influenced by randomly suggested sentencing demands — a direct anchoring effect in a high-stakes professional context.
Limits of the Bias Framework
Recent meta-scientific work has complicated the picture. Gigerenzer (2015, Psychological Review) has argued that many "biases" represent ecologically rational heuristics — decision rules that perform well in natural environments even if they violate formal rationality axioms. The availability heuristic, for example, is often a good guide to probability in real-world environments where frequency and recency are informative cues.
A large-scale study by Haigh and List (2005, Journal of Finance) found that professional options traders exhibited less loss aversion than student participants in identical experiments — suggesting that experience and feedback in consequential domains may attenuate some biases.
Counterarguments
The "debiasing" literature has produced somewhat disappointing results. Training people to recognize cognitive biases generally has modest effects on their subsequent judgment, particularly in novel contexts. Kahneman himself has noted that awareness of his own biases has not made him significantly less subject to them.
Nudge-based policy interventions — redesigning choice environments to steer people toward better defaults — have shown mixed results at scale. Meta-analyses of nudge interventions in health behavior find small average effects with high heterogeneity across contexts.
What We Can Conclude
The core findings of behavioral economics — that human judgment systematically departs from rationality in predictable ways — are robustly replicated. Anchoring, loss aversion, the planning fallacy, and the availability heuristic are real phenomena that appear in lab and naturalistic settings.
The stronger claim — that these biases fundamentally prevent rational decision-making or that they are uniform across people and contexts — overstates the evidence. Biases vary substantially across individuals, professions, and domains; some attenuate with experience and feedback; and many heuristics that produce "biased" responses in lab settings work reasonably well in natural environments.
The practical implication is not that humans are helplessly irrational, but that specific, high-stakes decisions — medical diagnosis, financial planning, long-horizon project estimation — warrant structured processes (checklists, reference class forecasting, adversarial review) to reduce the influence of predictable judgment errors.
